Is it cruel to keep animals in cages?

Is it cruel to animals in cages? Most people would say yes to this question and some people would say no. I think that it is cruel to keep animals in cages and captivity because its cruel and inhumane.

What if, when you were three and you were walking in the jungle with your family, in the protected area of the jungle. Then, out of nowhere men and women come out, grab you, your family and take you away, rip you away from your family. Then when you look back you find yoursef, trapped, alone in a metal cage, ristricted from the rest of the world as your force fed and watched 24/7.

What if you were the one in the cage, cramped and alone, no one else but you, getting caried from place to place. Ristriced from the rest of your kind, ristricked from being a hunter. Would you want to be like that or would you want to be free, in the wild, with others of your kind.

Not ony does this happen world wide but it happens to much. Animals deserve to be left alone in the wild with its other speices and animals. A lion raised in captivity, fed meat by hand, killed by others will have a less chance of surviving than one brought up in the wild, hunting for its own survival, doing the dirty work and taking the risk. 

Some people think that Zoo's are an example of this, and they are right, but its not as gruesome as explained above. Zoo's do capture animals but they give them a good life, they feed them and groom them and make sure there animals are healthy but it still seems wrong. Even though Zoo's give there animals a better life then some in the wild, if they had to release them back into the wild, then most of them would die since they do not know the skills needed to fight, hunt and survive.

In conclusion, I think that animal captivity is wrong and should be stopped, but saying that that if we do stop it now, the conciquences may be major since all these untrained animals are let free and animals that may be on the edge of extinction, and being treated the way they were was the only way they knew how to survive, could infact lead to there extinction.

The Merchant of Venice: Act IV sc i - Portia

Summary: In this scene Portia is pleading to Shylock for the life of Antonio. Antonio is responsible for the debt that Bassanio owes Shylock. Bassanio is Portia's partner and needed money to be with Portia. When Bassanio borrowed the money the punishment for failure to pay back the money on time was 'a pound of flesh' which would cause certain death. Bassanio didn't pay the debt back in time and now Shylock wants his 'pound of flesh' from Antonio. Portia is trying to get Shylock to change his mind and see the virtue of being merciful.

Should stem cell research be focused on more than what it is now and is using stem cells the right thing to do.

Stem cells are known to most people worldwide and are mostly thought that they are useless except for helping the body by getting rid of sickness and colds. But research shows that they can do a lot more than just getting rid of the familiar cold. If scientist, doctors, nurses and surgeons looked and listened and even tried out some of the research that people have found than they could possibly have the ability to cure diseases and disabilities that were said to be incurable such as paraplegics and some forms of cancer.

For instance, someone who can’t walk could have damaged spinal cells. This is often caused by a spinal cord injury. This could happen by damaging someone’s oligodendrocytes cells. The oligodendrocytes cells are what send the messages to the brain to move the legs. There for they can walk.

But research shows that if new stem cells replace the old, broken ones, then they could repair the spinal cord, there for giving some one the ability to walk.

But stem cells don’t only repair spinal cord injuries, it can help repair other things such as eye sight and can cure some diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, and one man in Germany got cured of HIV.

But does that mean it’s the right thing to do.

But some people are complaining that the way that stem cells are collected, isn’t right and that it shouldn’t be done unless there are other ways of getting them. The stem cells needed to do this process can be found in a couple of things, but the most common is by giving birth. When a dead foetus is born it carries the stem cells needed for the other people, but it has to be a dead foetus. This has caused a lot of concern from the public thinking that it is the wrong thing to do. But another way to collect the stem cells is in umbilical cords. These carry a lot of the red blood cells needed to complete the process of the spinal cord rebuilding and the curing of HIV.

But now, in this time, collecting stem cells via this a foetus and umbilical cords is the only way to cure such disabilities and diseases but what would happen if we put a little more effort and a little more time into research and tests then we could probably find other ways, safer, and less disturbing ways to find and collect information and the stem cells needed to for fill the needs of the patients.

But do you think that more research and time should be put in to this project?

Most people still wouldn’t agree with this they would say ‘it’s a waste of time’ but look at the facts. It could save millions of lives, many tests have been run in places like Germany and china and they all have come out with positives. Eye sight has been restored, paraplegics are given the ability to walk and cancer has been removed. But that’s only the beginning. What could happen in the later years of scientific research could enable us to do things that we thought were impossible. It could maybe be able to protect us from the sun and maybe make us stronger but without the research and funds needed we will never know right now.

In conclusion I strongly push forward that we should let the people run and test their experiments or we will never know what could have been and what could have happened.

WHAT ARE STEM CELLS?

Stem Cells are crucial to develop organisms. They are non-specialized cells which have the potential to create other types of specific cells, such as blood, brain, tissue or muscle cells.

Stem cells are in our body all our lives, but are far more potent in a foetus than in an adult body. Some types of stem cells may be able to create all other cells in the body. Others have the potential to repair or replace damaged tissue or cells.
Stem cell research is used for investigation of basic cells which develop organisms. The cells are grown in laboratories where tests are carried out to investigate fundamental properties of the cells.

The controversy surrounding stem cell research led to an intense debate about ethics. Up until the recent years, the research method mainly focused on Embryonic Stem Cells, which involves taking tissue from an aborted embryo to get proper material to study. This is typically done just days after conception or between the 5th and 9th week.

Stem cell research can potentially help treating a range of medical problems. It could lead humanity closer to better treat and possibly cure a number of diseases:

• Heart Diseases, Stroke and Diabetes

Leukemia is a cancer of white blood cells, or leukocytes. Like other blood cells, leukocytes develop from somatic stem cells. Mature leukocytes are released into the bloodstream, where they work to fight off infections in our bodies.

Leukemia results when leukocytes begin to grow and function abnormally, becoming cancerous. These abnormal cells cannot fight off infection, and they interfere with the functions of other organs.

Successful treatment for leukemia depends on getting rid of all the abnormal leukocytes in the patient, allowing healthy ones to grow in their place. One way to do this is through chemotherapy, which uses potent drugs to target and kill the abnormal cells. When chemotherapy alone can't eliminate them all, physicians sometimes turn to bone marrow transplants.

In a bone marrow transplant, the patient's bone marrow stem cells are replaced with those from a healthy, matching donor. To do this, all of the patient's existing bone marrow and abnormal leukocytes are first killed using a combination of chemotherapy and radiation. Next, a sample of donor bone marrow containing healthy stem cells is introduced into the patient's bloodstream.

If the transplant is successful, the stem cells will migrate into the patient's bone marrow and begin producing new, healthy leukocytes to replace the abnormal cells.

New evidence suggests that bone marrow stem cells may be able to differentiate into cell types that make up tissues outside of the blood, such as liver and muscle. Scientists are exploring new uses for these stem cells that go beyond diseases of the blood.
